The world is witnessing one of the biggest human migrations in recent history as Syrian refugees fleeing horrific conditions in their homeland seek asylum in Europe.
Horrifying details of families torn apart and the loss of countless lives have been dominating headlines around the globe. But in the midst of the turmoil, heartening acts of kindness and selflessness serve to reinstate one's faith in humanity.
Extending their religious hospitality well beyond their local community, a group of Sikhs has taken it upon themselves to set up a free bakery just 10 kilometres from the Syrian border, in the Pesh Harbour area. Langar Aid, a part of the larger Khalsa Aid from the United Kingdom, provides fresh bread and water to refugees daily, the Times of India reports.
Langar is the term used for the common kitchen in a Sikh place of worship, where free food is served to all, irrespective of religion or background. Volunteers have been providing the service for over a year in a modified version of the tradition. The scaled-down langar has been limited to bread so far due to the extremely limited quantities of food that can reach the Kurdish region. However, despite the dearth of supplies, the bakery churns out over a million loaves each month and supports over 16,000 refugees, according to BuzzFeed India.
