How To Sound Like An Expert On The Euro 2016

While you won't catch a glimpse of international stars like Lionel Messi or Neymar, the European Championships (the Euros) still has the same drama, tears player lineup you'll be seeing at the 2020 World Cup.

However, if you're a newbie to the Euros or have some idea about how it's shaping up for the teams, then this post will help you make sure you know your Zlatan Ibrahimovi? from your defenders.

So, how do the groups work?

It's a contentious year for the Euros since dismissed UEFA head Michel Platini was the one who passed an expanded league of 24 teams instead of 16. This makes for a longer tournament, as teams have been divided into six groups. Teams like England face stiff competition with Wales in their batch.

The reigning champions, Spain, will bid adieu to their star goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, and midfielder Andres Iniesta, who'll be playing their last international games at the Euros. If you're stumped for a team choice, you could go for underdogs like Ukraine or Turkey.

Which cool players should you know?

If you're looking to brush up on your player knowledge, then dropping Gareth Bale's name will help. The Real Madrid player cruised Wales to a 2–1 victory against Slovakia.

Yet brash stars like Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Jerome Boateng of Germany are the flashy wildcards who deliver the crucial support to their teams. Plus, who doesn't love a showboater to complain about? Germany's Mesut Ozil and France's Olivier Giroud are the dependable types who often provide great setups for outstanding goals.

Will there be drama?

Unfortunately, English and Russian supporters clashed violently in the streets of Marseille after the game between their teams. The UEFA will be investigating the incident, which began three days earlier when two England supporters were critically injured after clashes with opposite rivals and locals.

It was an ugly incident. We shouldn't have to prove you can't have a soccer match without a fight breaking out.

Has there been some drama already?

Only three days into Euro 2016, there's already been a red card for Albania captain Lorik Cana, who got riled up and did a handball. We've also seen the unique sibling story of brothers Taulant and Granit Xhaka, who played opposite each other in the Albania and Switzerland game. Perhaps that dinner conversation was awkward.

One thing to look out for is the tactic that gets people hating on soccer: diving — where players fall down like they've been in a tommy gun shootout to gain free kicks and penalties. Some are better than others at this — cough, Ronaldo, cough.
