Indian Cricket Team Lands A New Head Coach

He's India’s most successful bowler and a former India Test captain. Now Anil Kumble has been named head coach of the country’s men's cricket team.

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) received 57 applications for the position before it narrowed the list down to 21 applicants. It then handed the list over to the CAC, which interviewed the prospects.

One of those short-listers was Kumble’s former India teammate Shastri. The two played five tests together in the early '90s.

Under his watch from August 2014 to April 2016, the team reached the semi-finals of two major ICC tournaments, climbed to number one in the ICC Test rankings for eight weeks and beat Australia in (what was at the time) a milestone 3-0 T20I series.

Other short-listers included Lalchand Rajput, Tom Moody, Pravin Amre, Stuart Law and Andy Moles. The selection process included interviews with a cricket advisory team with members such as VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.

The decision was BCCI president Anurag Thakur's.

Kumble has worked for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians in the IPL as a mentor. He was granted the position during a press conference where he was handed the keys to the kingdom.

He comes in as the first coach since Duncan Fletcher, who, in 2013, garnered the team eight series victories in a row, including the Champions Trophy. After his removal, Ravi Shastri served as the team director.

“It’s a great honour to be back in the dressing room of India. I thank the BCCI,” Kumble said. “I have three of my former teammates (Sachin, Laxman, Ganguly) have been in the committee, two more with BCCI, all five of us will sit to discuss what’s best for Indian cricket.”

“It’s a huge responsibility and I am ready to take this role. Coaches come later, it’s always players first," Kumble said. "Our strategy will be to win."

His first task will be India’s tour of the West Indies for four Tests. That tour starts on July 21, which is also when his one-year tenure will begin.
