British Actor Saeed Jaffrey, known for films such as Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi and Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili, passed away on Sunday. His death was confirmed on Facebook by his youngest daughter Sakina Jaffrey and his niece Shaheen Aggarwal.
Shaheen wrote, "Today, a generation of Jaffrey's has passed away. Saeed Jaffrey has joined his brothers and sister and is rejoicing in the lap of his Heavenly Father, eternally. The entire Jaffrey family bids you 'adieu,' you beautiful, beautiful man. See you in Heaven!"
Jaffrey was born in Punjab and began his acting career when he set up a theatre company in New Delhi called Unity Theater. His theatrical work included the works of Tennessee Williams, Christopher Fry, Oliver Wilde and Shakespeare. In fact, Jaffrey was the first Indian actor to tour Shakespeare when he took his theatre company around the United States.
Saeed took his work as an actor very seriously. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and he then gained a Fulbright Scholarship in the United States, which led him to a second post-grad degree at The Catholic University of America.
