Phrases Made Famous By TV Shows
Meh – the non-verbal shrug is an expression of sheer indifference to the topic in discussion, made famous by the cartoon character Lisa Simpson, in response to her father’s question about the ‘MTV generation’. Thanks to text messaging and social media, this word is now commonly used.
Ayyyy – Arthur Fonzarelli – The Fonz as he was better known – popularized this catchphrase during his acting gig on Happy Days(1974-84) to the point where it is still extensively used and re-used in pop-culture. Many popular TV shows of today, such as Family Guy, often make references the phrase.
Yabba-Dabba-Doo – this is a no-brainer. Fred Flinstone made this a household phrase in during the 60s, and it continues to be one.
Suite Up! – TV’s IT playboy Barney Stinson wears suits, and only suits, all the time. Even while he sleeps. The ‘How I Met Your Mother’ actor has made this catchphrase a part of today’s common GK.
D’oh! – with the impact ‘The Simpsons’ has had on pop-culture, this list could not go without the mention of D’oh. Homer’s signature line expresses ultimate frustration, and has even made it into the Oxford English Dictionary.
That’s What She Said – Steve Carrel’s socially awkward Michael Scott persona often makes this unnecessary remark in response to statements he thinks have dirty implications. One would have to be living under a rock to not know this very popular catchphrase.
