Empowering the women of India one celebrity action hero at a time.
Bollywood superstar, Akshay Kumar is launching a martial arts training institute for women in Mumbai this year.
Before becoming an actor the Taekwondo black belt level fighter also studied Muay Thai in Bangkok before returning to Mumbai to be a professional martial arts trainer. Now, on top of shooting for his upcoming movie, Gabbar, “Sensei” Akshay has teamed up with Yuva Sena chief, Aaditya Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray to empower the women of Mumbai.
According to sources, Akshay and Aaditya will start teaching women to defend themselves from attacks this May with their first program, to be launched this May, in Andheri Sports Complex, in suburban Mumbai.
If you’re envisioning a city of female Jackie Chan, Aaditya explains that the training imparted won’t be “complicated” but rather it will be “basic and will involve learning simple forms of martial arts that are practical for each and every person.” More importantly, he explains that “It will be free-of-cost for women who want to learn, they will be taught by professionals and by Akshayji himself. We will take this across the state."
Akshay is looking forward to getting back into his old groove as well through this social initiative project, ‘I am thankful to Aditya Thackeray for coming up with the idea and also lending his complete support. The initiative is very close to my heart.’
The self-defense course is set to last for three months and will be free of charge.
