The word Navratri simply means "nine nights" in Sanskrit, and during these nine nights and ten days, the nine forms of Devi are worshipped.
Navratri is one of the holiest festivals celebrated by Hindus. Throughout the world, they get together to worship the different avatars of the Goddess Durga. The Goddess Durga is believed to have nine different incarnations, and each female deity signifies a distinct power.
Every year, there are actually five different Navratris, but the Sharad Navratri is the most popular. Sharad Navratri commences on the first day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month Ashwin. The festival is celebrated once a year around the beginning of October, although the dates are determined by the lunar calander, so it can sometimes vary by a few days. Diwali, the festival of lights, takes place 20 days after Dasara.
There are certain colours that should be worn on each different day of Navratri. Below, we list those colours and describe each day and who is worshipped.

The first form of the Goddess Durga is Shailaputri Maa, whose colour is bright red for the day where the Ghatasthapana set up the earthen pot. This starts off the next nine days of festivities. Shailputri is considered the daughter of the Himalayas and is a form of Shakti, the consort of Lord Shiva.

On the second day of Navratri, Bharmacharini is the form of the Goddess that is worshipped. Her name derives from the word Brahma, which means Tapa or "penance." There is a mythical idea that says this Goddess enlightens elegant forms with power and divine and spiritual grace. On this day, devotees wear Royal Blue.
