Whether the mishap was a ratings ploy or a genuine mistake, Steve Harvey will be forever remembered for his blunder at the Miss Universe pageant.
He first had the wrong winner, Miss Colombia, crowned instead of the true victor, Miss Philippines.
Appointing Steve Harvey was a dubious choice to begin with, since he's got a long history of telling sexist jokes on Family Feud and even hosting his daytime talk show to 2,000 men who harassed and catcalled his female guests. Harvey was a ridiculous host who constantly ogled and dropped in objectifying jokes like, "My wife has her eye on me during the swimsuit competition."
Whether you're on board with a beauty paegent or not, you can't deny that many of the contestants had valid things to say, raising awareness about important issues. Miss South Africa, Refilwe Mthimunye, talked about educating girls on sexual health and eventual winner Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, spoke about being the breadwinner for her family. Obviously it's so patriarchal for women to be parading in bikinis to voice their opinions, but Harvey only reinforced that sexist tone with his misogyny.

Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez's, moment of glory only lasted two minutes. The $30,000 blue diamond and topaz crown was lifted off her head, and the crowd must have felt as heartbroken as we were watching at home. Miss Philippines looked so shocked when she had to walk on stage and have the crown placed on her and noted that it was a "very 2015" moment.
Harvey apologized in front of the crowd for his mistake, but that didn't stop Twitter from roasting him pretty hard:

Other commenters took Harvey's sexism to task:
Armchair detectives didn't buy the scandal, and there was chatter about this being a publicity stunt. Suspicious viewers point to Miss Colombia's Snapchat, where Harvey may have claimed it was the teleprompter that said "Miss Universe — Colombia." This doesn't add up to his excuse of reading his cue cards wrong, which he then displayed for the cameras to prove that Miss Wurtzbach was indeed the winner.
Despite the roasting, Harvey did apologize. But his apology doesn't excuse his downright sexist behaviour throughout the night. He completely overshadowed both women's accomplishments. This was the show's first year without Donald Trump, so there was a lot riding on this being a good show.
