India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), commonly known as the censor board, is famously conservative.
Hollywood and Bollywood films are routinely subjected to what many consider unnecessary cuts before they're released in theatres.
Recently, the latest instalment in the James Bond franchise, Spectre, came under scrutiny for “excessive” kissing. Two amorous scenes were reduced by half, according to Mashable.com. 50 Shades of Grey reportedly didn't pass at all despite voluntary cuts from the distributors, and Angry Indian Goddesses was toned down with cuss words censored.
Both films are unabashedly promoting themselves as “sex comedies,” and the trailers and posters leave little doubt of their NSFW, adult content. After prolonged delays due to what the board called “extreme vulgarity,” both films have now been given an “adult certificate,” equivalent to an R rating, and passed for wide release.
But the films aren’t quite in the clear just yet. The trailers for Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 and Mastizaade have now caught the eye of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. DNA India reports that the ministry demanded an explanation from the CBFC, and the response was more than a little blasé. CBFC chair Pahlaj Nihalani reportedly said the board is stuck in a “catch-22.” On the one hand, they're constantly under fire from the public for being too prudish. In response, they passed content that would normally never see the light of day. And consequently, they’re now in hot water with the I&B ministry for releasing material that's against the board's guidelines. Apparently, the censor board can’t catch a break and is in a “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” scenario!
Adding another twist to the already convoluted situation, the CBFC claims that the trailers for the two films are essentially illegal. Both trailers include footage and lines that the censor board cut from the actual films, so they're not certified for public viewing.
In the meantime, social media has been buzzing about which trailer is raunchier. Both feature not-so-subtle innuendo, plenty of skin and suggestive lines, so it’s a safe bet to say cinematic excellence won't be the deciding factor in that debate! If all's clear in time, though, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 with former Big Boss contestant Mandana Karimi will release on January 22nd and Mastizaade with adult film star Sunny Leone will hit theatres on January 29th.
