How to Recreate Mindy Kaling’s Elegant Evening Look At This Year’s Vanity Fair Oscars Party

I absolutely adore Mindy Kaling. Not just because she’s hilarious, but also because she oozes confidence — she seems like a real person who isn’t afraid to do her thing and just be herself. Being an Indian woman myself, I actually feel proud to see that kind of strong South Asian female representation in Hollywood and on primetime TV.

Speaking of Hollywood, the award-winning actress has been leaving quite the mark lately on the red carpets, including the recent Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she rocked a sexy black, plunge-neck Salvador Perez gown. Her ensemble was completed with simply styled hair and ultra-glam makeup — the perfect combination for a night out. Keep reading for tips on how to recreate the look yourself.

Face

Mindy Kaling’s look starts with glowing, radiant skin that looks natural and healthy instead of overly made up. The trick is to start with clean, moisturized skin. I recently discovered new Soap & Glory The Fab Pore Cleansing Cloths, which actually work to reduce shine on the T-zone. I recommend using one of these followed by moisturizing before starting with any makeup.

Stick to a sheer liquid foundation that will help give you the healthy glow that Mindy Kaling has. Then use an iridescent powder blush on the apples of your cheeks. NARS Blush in Super Orgasm is my top pick.

Eyes

The eyes for Mindy Kaling’s elegant look are pretty straightforward: black liquid liner on the top, black liner inside the lower lash line, and mascara on the top and bottom lashes. What really adds the drama, though, especially on a darker skin tone like Mindy’s, is the shimmery silver-white eyeshadow that helps to make the liner and lashes stand out. It also gives your eyes a little extra sparkle. Make Up For Ever has the best range of eyeshadow colours. For this look, try Artist Shadow in Snow

Lips

Nothing says "glamour" like a classic red lip. A lot of South Asian women shy away from bright colours because they think it looks too flashy. But I really love this brighter scarlet shade on Mindy Kaling — it adds a pop of colour that brightens her whole face. Burberry just came out with a new line of moisturizing, lightweight lipsticks with shades that would be perfect for this look. Try Burberry Kisses in Poppy Red 105 (pictured) or Crimson Pink 53, which has a touch of pink that would work well with medium or lighter skin tones.

Hair

There’s nothing overly styled about Mindy Kaling’s hair, but that’s exactly why it works. (On a side note, I’m not usually a fan of Indian women going blonde, but Mindy’s ombre effect looks pretty great!) To recreate the style, part your hair to one side and, using a fine-toothed comb, start teasing at the crown. Then, starting one or two inches from the front, comb your hair back to create the illusion of long side-bangs in the front with volume at the crown. Finally, use a large-barrel curling iron just on the bottom of your hair to add a subtle wave on the ends.
