After reading about the massive destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines, we were amazed when we came across news of its disqualification from future international beauty pageants.
The two-year ban was supposedly imposed by the Association of Beauty Pageant Franchise Holders (ABPFH), on account of “enormous advantage” by Filipina candidates in almost all pageants this year. Shocked?
Well, don’t be, as it’s not true. The news that spread like wild fire, followed by several indignant comments on twitter, is yet another product of the widely expanding trend of satirical and humorous fake news.
This kind of news brings about a merger between the classical form of satire and popular forms of mass media. In the wake of the furore caused by this enchanting example of fake news, let’s look at some of the funniest and most popular fake news websites.
The Adobo Chronicles
Advertised as your source of up-to-date unbelievable news, this is the website that launched a thousand debates about the un/fairness of the ban that never was imposed in the first place. You can get a fair idea of how funny this website is by simply looking at its description of itself.
The website is highly transparent, manifestly claiming that, “Everything you read on this site is based on fact, except for the lies”.
The ironic humor continues as they inform the reader of their intent when they state, “We reserve the right to edit or censor any comment that we deem inappropriate or funnier than our posts”.
We’re sure the creators would’ve enjoyed a good laugh seeing the outrage caused by their report on the ban.
the ONION
Calling itself America’s Finest News Source, this website covers a range of topics like Politics, Sports, Business, Science/Technology, Breaking News and the very amusing Fantasy Football.
They also have their own set of interesting, tongue-in-cheek videos that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter.
NewsBiscuit
This website was launched by John O’Farrell in September 2006 “with the noble aims of eradicating global poverty, creating a lasting peace in the Middle East and providing a daily dose of humour to bored people at work”.
One look at the website will show you how well they have succeeded in achieving at least the last of their goals.
Do check out their Writers’ Room if you have fun stories of your own.
The Spoof!
Living up to its tag line “Always there with the funniest spoof headlines,” this website redefines entertainment for you.

UNCONFIRMED SOURCES
Unconfirmed Sources offers its own brand of political satire and parodies of news stories.
An elaborate disclaimer on the site blatantly tells you what you should expect from it, “In case you didn't get it, none of the stories are real. It's all fake. We made it all up. It's satire. The people might be real but the quotes are not. If it gets you mad, get a life”.
The website has a humorous collection of stories that are hilarious and highly creative.
The next time you read a news report that seems completely outrageous, better confirm its sources before reacting to it.
They might be 'unconfirmed' for all you know.
