Heavy Metal In The Home

Dec 16, 2015

Metallics in the home can be a great way to snazz up any given space. Working similar to a neutral, a metallic tone can blend, accent or ramp up the decor of a room or the back drop of an event.

Small Touches

Metallics have to be used strategically because it's easy for them to overwhelm a space. Small accents are the perfect hint and final touch to any space. Stainless steel is a popular choice for the kitchen because it can handle the daily wear and tear of use and can be easily polished to look like new. The stainless steel knives of the Boca Cheese Set Lazy Susan ($49 CDN) from Urban Barn are cool and chic against the slate of the cheese platter.

Copper has been hitting the kitchen scene hard in the last few seasons as copper, bronze and pink gold tones have been highlighting steels and other metals in all sorts of kitchen appliances and utensils. This Salt and Pepper Shaker Set ($19.99 CDN) from Marshalls, are a flirty and fun addition to a table or counter top. They are the perfect pair to add a hint of metallic to the kitchen land just the right amount of colour to add a pop.

But if you opt not to use metallics in such a bold way, use metallics to jazz up the dinner table by switching up the cutlery and wares and adding little hints of it. Trade in traditional drinkware for these glam Champagne Flutes ($3.99 CDN each) from HomeSense, or any other glassware that's got flecks of silver or hints of gold.

Bigger Impact

With rooms such as the bedroom or living room, too much metallic can become overwhelming. Choosing key pieces that will add a brightness and sharpness in the room will go a long way. For a simple but interesting touch, the Metallic Feather Object ($34.99 CDN) from HomeSense is a great way to add a hint of metal to any room. Use it to jazz up the bedroom or living room, as part of a centrepiece on the table, in the office or even in the bathroom. This small but tall piece is super versatile.

Carrying the metallic trend into the rest of the house can be easy with the use of key items. The Cupola Floor Lamp ($399 CDN) from Urban Barn is perfect to add just a touch of gold to a space. Tuck it away in a corner to hover above a cozy couch or have it front and centre beside a table or the reading nook.
