Editor’s Note, Fall 2007

Aug 06, 2013

The fall issue of ANOKHI is always the time when we dedicate the most pages to fashion, beauty and creative new trends and topics. The momentum starts with stunning Indian fashion from designer Suneet Varma (Around the World, One Runway at a Time, p.24), whose coveted collections offer a prism of colours, intricate embroidery and spontaneous patterns all doused in sequins and crystals!

For brides-to-be and fashion connoisseurs alike, it’s interesting to watch how the Indian wedding bazaar is continually reinventing itself to meet the increasingly flamboyant tastes of its consumers, so indulge in a sneak peek at Bridal Asia, showcasing the latest in glamourous wedding wear and accessories (A Sneak Peek at this Year's Dazzling & Decadent Couture, p.16).

Who could have predicted that one day mommy and baby would be sporting cute, attention-getting matching tees? The fashion industry has sets its sight on the fashionista mom and her offspring. Read Posh Mommy, Posh Baby (p.28) to find out who’s buying the big ticket items and which celebrities are joining in on the fun!

In this issue, we’ve launched a new column called Beauty Spot (p.64). ANOKHI takes beauty seriously, and we know that most women know that looking their best takes more than a new lipstick shade. We want to give beauty the kind of seriousness and analysis it has never seen before for South Asian women. Dr. Deepa Takhar answers your questions about laser hair removal, Botox, surgical procedures, lotions and creams and much more. I hope this column, offering unbiased comparisons and skincare knowledge, becomes a resource for you.

Also, in our beauty pages, we explore what has come to be known by many non-surgical treatment seekers as cosmetic acupuncture (p.62). Fusing the principles of traditional Chinese medicine with today’s cosmetic demands for anti-aging, facials and microdermabrasion are now being coupled with acupuncture to achieve a balanced, harmonious energy, which, in turn, leads to radiant, beautiful skin.

Our Percolator Talk this issue (What Does it Really Take to Be a Powerful Woman? p.90) recognizes not only a true hero in our community but also a mentor for South Asian women. Sharing her incredible journey with us, Dr. Sheela Basrur speaks about her position as assistant deputy minister of public health and her battle with cancer.

With all of the holidays our diverse readership may be gearing up for–Eid, Diwali or Christmas–our fall issue puts the Holiday Gift Guide (p.48) in your hands just in time to help with the gift-giving, and celebratory, process! We've got lots of fun and unique products for everyone on your gift list.

And there’s no time like the present to think about going green. Nowadays, it is indeed trendy to be green, but this trend must be sustainable if we are genuinely thinking about and value our future on this earth. ANOKHI took the green challenge and found ways to model your kitchen in eco-high style (Cooking Up Conservation, Sustainability and a Greener Kitchen, p.70) and we offer our top picks in choosing an eco-friendly car (Green Wheels, p.100). Everyone can do their part–be it big or small.

Our entertainment pages profile actress Archie Panjabi (p.102). From her memorable role in cult favourite East is East to working alongside Hollywood A-listers like Ralph Fiennes, Russell Crowe and Angelina Jolie, her versatility as an actress keeps unfolding before our eyes. Also, read about a film festival gem, Vanaja (p.108), winning more festival awards than any other South Asian film, this coming of age tale is that of a young girl who finds herself caught in a class division in rural South India.

Finally, we’ve introduced a new page in the magazine titled “My Life”. This page is dedicated to you, our readers, who wish to share a memorable experience that has impacted your life. Whether it’s a result of work or play, we want to know all the details! We kick off My Life in this issue with a tourist’s tale of her adventure in India where she’s offered the acting gig of all time-starring in a Bollywood film as an extra! Send in your My Life memorable experience to me at [email protected].

Until next time, hope you enjoy this issue.
