Editor’s Note, Spring 2008

Aug 05, 2013

I can’t think of a better issue to celebrate the power of friendship and the ability it has to help us move forward with strength and a positive attitude. Just this month alone, after falling seriously ill, I was blissfully reminded (because we often take it for granted) of how lucky I am to have a circle of friends who make me feel loved, understood and connected.

This power of friendship is what enables us to aspire to great things. So this issue celebrates the strength of extraordinary women who make bold and courageous decisions to change wrong into right around the world. Fighting malnutrition and child labour in India, raising awareness about commercial sexual exploitation of children and creating support networks for victims of domestic violence are just some of the causes that have been pursued. Turn to page 94 to read about how women are empowering each other every day, developing meaningful relationships and even founding organizations themselves.

In this issue’s “My Life” section (page 62), one of our readers candidly shares her reasons for moving forward with breast reduction surgery. No doubt, a difficult decision to make, but certainly with the love and support of her kinship network, it was a choice that she knew was understood.

Our showbiz section (page 108) features an intimate chat with actor Manu Narayan (Broadway’s Bombay Dreams) who has just experienced one of the most fulfilling acting gigs in his career. While working side by side with comedic heavyweight Mike Myers during the filming of The Love Guru (opens in theatres across North America in June), a wonderful friendship emerged. Narayan speaks about the formidable respect and admiration he feels for Myers’ work ethic and professionalism.

Hanging out with your personal entourage, whether it’s sipping Bellinis on a patio while catching up on the latest ANOKHI fashion and beauty trends for spring or holding a meeting at a friend’s condo to deliberate about plans to make the world greener, safer and a much better place for future generations-cherish the moment-and know that you wouldn’t be where you are right now, without friends.
