Thoughts from the Editor-In-Chief, Fall 2009

Jul 29, 2013

Rapture

As soon as the wind carries that extra nip in the air, we begin to prepare ourselves for the next stage of the year and our lives. After another summer (and what a summer it was!), we replace the frolicking with a sense of frantic as we return to the merry-go-round of life with school, work, holiday prep and of course, planning ways to ring in the new year.

Fall also brings a certain tinge of electricity as we take stock and restock ourselves. Just like clockwork, when we see the fail-proof fabulousness of the Fall Ready-to-Wear collections, we immediately take a mental inventory of our closets and relish in that other wonderful fall tradition: creating lists of wants, needs and got-to-absolutely-haves to take us through the season and beyond.

That’s when I get really busy and start making my own wish list of what I need to really rock it this season. As with every collection, it’s a wonderful melange of the tried and true pieces and items that bring a delightful juxtaposition by adding a certain sense of humour and unexpected surprise. But at the end of the day, nothing lights my fire more than putting on an incredible pair of boots, throwing on a luxurious shawl, grabbing my statement bag and hitting the town. Oh and let’s not forget my favourite vintage shades. Fall always gives that extra spice to my step. I don’t walk—I strut.

The idea of rediscovery and recovery is even more profound this time of the year. With the economy holding a glimmer of hope, we are also preparing to embark upon a brave new world. Our first ever Fashion & Style Issue lets you enjoy the frivolity of fashion without being frivolous. Relish in it without being burdened. Just like the magazine’s mantra, this is the season to be unique and let your individual style shine.

From the present (and future) fashion capitals of the world, we deliver a breakdown of the hottest looks and tips and tricks to make you stand out from the pack without breaking the bank (check out our expanded Fashion & Style sections). We’ve also created an out-of-this-world fashionable dimension by single-handedly knocking down the cliché of East meets West and giving the outdated idea of “fusion” a much-needed injection of fierceness. (Diamonds & Pearls page 92; The Main Event page 72).

Look and feel fabulous, but need a fête? Don’t fret because we’ve compiled a global list of hot spots to jet to, to ring in 2010. (New Year, New City page 118). And finally, you don’t have to get stressed out about gifts for your holiday soirees because our annual Holiday Gift Guide (page 48) has you covered.

So go ahead and get swept away this season. Just don’t forget to strut.

I always love to hear your feedback. Feel free to write to me at [email protected].

Best,
