Where Does Your Staircase Lead?

Spring is that time of year we all agree some level of freshness is warranted in our lives, and this can be as little as a bit of rejuvenation, a moderate recalibration or a full on rebirth. For me, it’s all of the above (what’s new?). I use this time, while the colder months have me confined indoors (I’m not an outdoorsy kinda girl unless it involves sun, sand, sea and a cocktail or three), to see how I can be a better version of myself in all aspects of my life — the personal me, the professional me and everything in between.

I’ve got to admit though, that it’s an equally exhausting and highly emancipating feeling when you discover the how comes, the how-tos and the do alls of it all. But it can be quite daunting to know where to start the process. Me, I begin by asking myself one simple question: “Where does your staircase lead?” I know, I know, I hear ya . . . what a HUGE question and can it be answered fully in any given process of exploration? Sometimes, yes, but most of the time, its just that — a process that continues throughout life which we add to and delete from. This is why we tend to revisit it throughout our lives, especially when we hit a wall, as we all do from time to time. Moreover, it depends on what it is that we want out of life that we feel we haven’t yet acquired. Then, when we throw those pangs of fear into the mix (you know the ones I mean) — the “Maybe I never will. Maybe it’s my destiny to not get there. What if I fail?” — it’s then that we draw illogical, forgone conclusions based on one single, underlying, interconnecting notion: the fear factor. Well, my take on this is that if you plant and water the seed, it will grow, so plant and water the RIGHT seed and IT will grow.

Marilyn Monroe once said, “If I’d observed all the rules, I’d never have gotten anywhere.” For me, these “rules” are twofold: external ones created by “them” (whoever they are) and internal ones created by me. Put them both together (which we generally do) and we have a beautifully crafted cocktail of impossible. To quote another Hollywood icon, Audrey Hepburn, once said, “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” I’m possible is not the privilege of the few but the very right of us all. It’s this mindset that creates the next step to ascension, and THAT’s what I’m always rejuvenating, recalibrating and rebirthing each year: big, medium or small, it doesn’t really matter so long as the next step up is crafted and reached. It is this fearless mindset that ANOKHI MEDIA celebrates each year on our anniversary in February — the next step up which leads us one step closer to the next.

Similarly, we scour the globe to find like-minded people from our community whose parallel respective staircases are on an upward trajectory and also celebrate their journeys at our anniversary event in Toronto. This past February was no different. Twelve personalities in media, music, comedy, film & TV, and fashion were recognized and showcased at our 11th anniversary event. Highlights can be seen on page 18. The full photo gallery can be seen at www.anokhimedia.com/events and video coverage can be seen at www.anokhimedia.com/pulsetv.

One of the honourees at the event, actress Nazneen Contractor, graces this issue’s cover as our annual beauty issue’s beauty personality of the year. Read about the staircase she has built one step at a time on page 28, and like me, you’ll at the very least be inspired to rejuvenate, recalibrate and maybe even to be reborn!

Until next time, always remember to Be UNIQUE. Be ANOKHI.
