Winter Workout!

Oct 17, 2013

Don’t let the cold weather give you the fitness chills. This is the perfect time to really break out of the predictable gym scene and take advantage of the myriad of outdoor activities that are not only fantastic fat burners, but also light on the wallet!

Fitness has seasons too. According to a recent study, the winter months are the hardest for losing weight. The average person actually ends up gaining up to five pounds between October and March. So how can you avoid falling into this category?

Lucky for you, the solution is right here! With these tips you’ll not only avoid the winter bulge but you will also get even more fit than you are now by next spring. Winter is an amazing season to work on your target areas. I always pick two body parts that I want to see stronger by spring and plan my workouts around them. Legs and stomach can be ideal target areas. Once you pick your target areas, you have a goal in mind. That clear goal will help you get out there and work out without fail.

You can easily make winter activities into exercise. Here are some activities you can do to burn calories and have fun.

Go ice-skating.

Yes, this fun activity can actually be very effective and can help burn up to 500 calories in 45 minutes. Be creative, and make sure you’re wearing the right clothing and gear.

Try skiing.

Cross-country skiing is an amazing way to shape up those legs and also get an amazing 500-calorie workout.

Shovel snow.

Now this is a plus workout! You get amazing exercise as well as a clear driveway at the end of 45 minutes. You’ll also burn 550 to 600 calories.

Play in the snow.

Yes, you read correctly. Get out there and have some fun playing like a kid. Have a snowball fight with friends or make a snowman. You’ll burn 300 to 350 calories in a fun-filled 45 minutes.

Jump rope.

This can go anywhere with you. When you’re using it outside, make sure you have layers of clothing on so you burn some extra calories. A 10-minute session of on-and-off jump rope exercise can burn up to 100 calories.

Remember, it’s easy to sit and watch TV and munch on snacks, but it takes dedication, motivation and consistency to achieve your perfect body. When you do achieve your fitness goals, believe me — it’s one of the best feelings in the world. Keep at it!
