Issue 29 / Fab Mascaras That You Can Get At Your Drugstore

Fab Mascaras That You Can Get At Your Drugstore

Dec 23, 2015

Don’t let the price fool you — these mascaras will give your lashes that extra oomph without breaking the bank.

I’m a little bit obsessed with mascara. The right formula and brush can lengthen, volumize and hold a curl, helping to open up your eyes and fight that tired I-haven’t-slept-in-days look. I use so much mascara I go through an entire tube pretty quickly, which makes the whole mascara thing pretty expensive. Tired of replacing my $30+ products regularly, I scoured the drugstore makeup aisles to find the best mascaras, all under $10 CDN.

This mascara is hands-down my favourite of both drugstore and high-end brands. The brush is nice and big so you can evenly coat your lashes from root to tip, and it helps prevent clumping. The formula lengthens and defines lashes, making your eyes a focal point without losing out on the natural look. If you prefer bigger lashes, simply add a couple more coats before the mascara dries. This product will last you all day and hold a curl while it’s at it.

Covergirl The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara, $9.99 CDN

Covergirl’s new The Super Sizer mascara looks a bit scary, but I promise it will be worth it. The brush itself is a bit jarring with a mixture of short and long bristles, but it’s for a good reason. The idea behind this mascara is to help you achieve a false lash look, without actual false lashes. To do this, you place the brush at the base of your lashes and pull up to the tip while twirling or rotating the brush. This will give you long and thick lashes. I do find you need to work the brush into the lashes a bit to get definition. I also found the formula itself to be a bit heavy, but this just took some getting used to.

Essence Plump No Clump! Volume Mascara, $4.99 CDN

This was my first time trying out an Essence mascara, and I was pleasantly surprised by this product. First and foremost, it stays true to its name and really doesn’t clump the lashes. It’s buildable, so you can put one anywhere from one to three coats to achieve the look you want. The brush is nice and big, and can get right to the base of the lashes. After wearing this mascara just once, I was impressed with the volume and definition it gave my lashes.

Rimmel Super Curler Mascara, $7.99 CDN

Rimmel has created a new mascara that is designed to instantly curl your lashes. I was skeptical because that just seems too good to be true. But one coat of this, and your lashes will instantly curl, opening up your eyes and making sure you never have to use an eyelash curler again. I did find that the formula can easily clump and give you that dreaded spider leg look if you aren’t careful. I suggest making sure to cover your lashes in thin coats, and putting on no more than two coats.
