Publisher’s Message, Spring 2013

In my younger years, I believed wholeheartedly that “beauty” was a notion far removed from my reality due to the perception that it was defined by what commercial marketing propagated to the masses. Duly, I never allowed myself to ever imagine that in time and with experience, I would redefine its meaning and purpose on a personal level and include it in my vocabulary to define myself.

I learned as the years went on that beauty, like most anything in life, is a manifestation of belief that our mind can activate if our heart is open and receptive to it. Suffice to say, my perspective on beauty has since morphed from being a noun-based definition to an adjective-based one. This perspective couldn’t be more accurately denoted than through the words of Edith Wharton: “There are two ways of spreading light: to be a candle or the mirror that reflects it.” That is, the internal acceptance of self in its truest form (the candle) and the aura that this exudes to the outside world (the mirror). What’s your definition of beauty?

Being that this is our annual beauty issue, I asked this issue’s cover personality, superstar Priyanka Chopra, to share her ideology on beauty when she came to Toronto for our 10th anniversary event in February (highlights on page 20). We chatted about her incredible journey of 13 years since she was crowned Miss World in 2000, her illustrious film career and her recent foray into mainstream music. Read what she had to say in a revealing interview which gives great insight into who she is, how she thinks and why (page 30).
