The Art of Waxing

Apr 04, 2014

Thinking about getting a Brazilian wax this spring? Read on for tips on how to ease your anxiety and everything you need to know about waxing your bikini area.

What are the benefits of waxing?

Waxing has many benefits. With regular waxing, the hair becomes finer and sparser so there is less hair growth and there is no stubble. Over time, the hair follicle weakens, resulting in softer hair texture. Also, wax formulas cause less irritation and red bumps on the skin, compared to shaving where there is a chance for razor cuts, burn or nicks. Topical hair removal creams and depilatory creams contain chemicals that may irritate the skin. Waxing is a cost-and time-effective hair removal solution. It is more budget-friendly than laser hair removal and the results are at least up to three weeks of smooth, hair-free skin, not to mention less time wasted in the shower on a daily basis.

Brazilian wax is a popular trend. How can it be more comfortable for clients?
Remember, waxing is not a relaxing treatment and there is a little discomfort involved, so when it is done fast, there is less pain. I have come up with the quickzilian wax, which is a Brazilian wax done in about eight minutes. We have an eight-step technique that all our waxologists are trained to do.

Men’s waxing is quite common. What is a Manzilian?

Male clients make up for 20 to 40 per cent of waxing appointments and the most requested services are for chest, back and eyebrows. Manscaping, or a manzilian wax, is the equivalent of a female bikini wax but for men. Men can clean up and maintain for their own personal hygiene reasons or as a treat for their significant other. It is perfect for athletes needing a smooth finish or for those who simply do not like excessive body hair.

What should clients do to prepare for waxing appointments?

Be sure to eat a snack and don’t go to a wax appointment on an empty stomach. Avoid caffeinated beverages, since they won’t help you relax and stay still. Have a chat with your aesthetician before any treatment begins so you are able to address your concerns. Also, avoid tanning at least 48 hours before your wax appointment.

Are there any waxing etiquettes?

Professional aestheticians are used to removing hair, so for the most part no, there are no pre-waxing steps needed. If the hair is too long, you may want to trim it at home; otherwise most aestheticians will trim it at the salon.

What steps should you take, post wax, to avoid ingrown hairs?

After each wax session, try not to do any physical activity that can cause excessive sweating, such as working out, for at least 48 hours. This will cause the pores to open and the sweat can cause breakouts. On the second day, use a scrub on the waxed area and continue to regularly use a scrub in the shower to prevent ingrown hairs.

Alaa Abdullah is a professional aesthetician with over 10 years of industry experience. She is the owner of Allure Body Bar in Toronto. She specializes in waxing and she has mastered the Brazilian wax technique, done in eight minutes, for both women and men.
